Questions about DEEP

Q: Can I apply for the program after the application deadline?
A: Yes, however, you will only be considered for courses or themed topic stream that have room.

Q: What is a Stream?
A: A Stream is a collection of related courses that complement each other. We have assembled a number of Streams for both the senior and junior levels. Taking a Stream is a great way to explore a particular discipline or area of engineering you have interest in.

Q: I am signing up for a Themed Topic Stream. Can I take whichever design course I like?
A: Yes. You can take any of the design courses during DEEP Design Week (Week 4 of DEEP). Although some of the design courses relate to the themed topic streams, you can take whichever design course you like.

Q: Can I take courses from more than one stream?
A: Yes, you can pick and choose courses from different streams to create a customized program. You can only choose 1 course per week.

Q: Can I take only one course?
A: You can take one course per week of DEEP, since each course is one week in length. You can take up to 4 DEEP courses over the duration of DEEP Summer Academy.

Q: Can I take a DEEP Design course in Week 4 DEEP: Design Week without taking a course in Weeks 1, 2 or 3?
A: No. Students wishing to take a DEEP Design course must take at least one course from the core program during Week 1, 2 OR 3.

Q: Should I pick Second and Third Choice DEEP courses on my application?
A: Yes. We strongly recommend you pick Second and Third Choice options for all courses you are registering in. If you choose Second and Third Choices, you will be considered for early admission to the program.

Q: I want more details about a specific course. How can I found out more?
A: If after reading the course description on the DEEP website you still have questions, email our DEEP office at engineering@ecf.utoronto.ca.

Q: What time and what days are the classes?
A: Courses run from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm with a 1 hour lunch break, Monday to Friday. See the course offerings section of the website for specific course dates.

Q: I’m a university or college student. Can I register?
A: No. The DEEP Summer Academy is for high school students or those entering First Year of university studies in September 2008.

Q: What happens if my course choice gets cancelled?
A: If your course is cancelled but you’ve been accepted into the DEEP Summer Academy, you will be offered an alternative course. We highly recommend you make Second and Third Choice courses so that you can be automatically considered for these choices in the event your First Choice course is cancelled.

Q: Is financial assistance available?
A: Yes, we have a bursary program. Please call our office at 416-978-3872 or email us at engineering@ecf.utoronto.ca for procedures and the bursary application.

Questions about staying in residence during DEEP

Q: Where is the residence located?
A: All DEEP Summer Academy residents will live together with their DEEP Dons on the same floor in the New College Residence complex on the University of Toronto’s St. George Campus.

Q: Will students have to share a room?
A: Most rooms will be double, however there are a few single rooms available. The single rooms will be allocated to students with special requirements and then be randomly assigned. All double rooms are single sex. Students are paired based on answers supplied in the roommate matching form included in the pre-program package.

Q: What happens if students get lost?
A: All students will be provided with an emergency contact card which they should keep with them at all times. This card lists the phone numbers of all of the residence dons, the DEEP program office, the New College Porter’s Desk and the Campus Police.

Q: Will DEEP students living in residence be living amongst students of the opposite sex?
A: Yes. New College is a co-ed residence. We have an open door policy to ensure that when someone other than the residents of a room are inside, the door must be open at all times. Roommates are always same-sex. There are separate bathrooms for males and females.

Q: Are students allowed to go off-campus for lunch?
A: No. Students are required to purchase lunch on campus each day. The Engineering Complex has over 20 acceptable restaurants. $7 per day is sufficient to purchase a nourishing meal on campus.

Q: What kind of residence supervision exists?
A: Yes. We have hired a number of live-in residence dons we call DEEP Dons. The don to student ratio is 1 to 15.

Q: Is living in residence safe?
A: Yes. New College has 24-hour porters who are stationed at the front desk to assist in any emergency situation. A security guard also makes regular rounds between the hours of 10 pm and 6 am. A DEEP Don is also on-duty between the hours of 11 pm and 9 am. Each bedroom has its own lock and each floor requires key access.

Q: How do students get their meals?
A: Breakfast and dinner are included in the residence fees. Meals take place in the Audrey Taylor Dining Hall, attached to Wilson Hall in the New College Complex. Breakfast takes place from 7:30 am to 9 am and dinner is served daily from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Students are responsible for purchasing their own lunch.

Students are responsible for getting to meals on time. Any missed meals will not be reimbursed and students will have to make their own arrangements.

Q: What precautions will be taken for students with peanut allergies?
A: All students are required to fill out a personal information form detailing any special needs including dietary concerns before they arrive in residence. However, parents of students with severe peanut allergies should be aware that New College cannot guarantee access to a peanut free environment. Therefore, it is a personal decision whether to participate in the residence option.

Q: If students follow a special diet, can this be accommodated in residence?
A: New College offers many meal options, including Halal and vegetarian options at every meal. Kosher meals can be provided at an additional cost to the participant.

Q: Will students be allowed to leave the residence without supervision?
A: Activities are scheduled from approximately 6 pm to 9 pm. We are planning a variety of activities to meet the interests of all our residents and will be encouraging participation in scheduled events. On occasion students over 16 can plan their own activities in groups of 3 or more. If the students are under 16, they may not leave the residence without don supervision. All students must return and be signed back in by 9 pm. A record of outside activities will be kept in a sign out book so that dons know exactly where every resident is at any given time.

Q: Can students visit a relative or friend who lives in Toronto?
A: Yes. However we have strict rules surrounding these visits. We must receive permission by either email or fax for this visit. The relative or friend must come to the residence to pick up the student and meet their don. All students must be signed back in to residence by 9 pm.

Q: Can students bring friends to participate in residence activities?
A: No. Only students enrolled in the residence program are permitted to take part in residence activities. There are no overnight guests allowed.

Q: Are DEEP Dons trained to handle medical emergencies?
A: All of our dons have extensive experience working with youth in a supervisory role and take part in extensive mandatory training. This includes a certified Red Cross Emergency First Aid and CPR course. All students are required to fill out a personal information form detailing any special needs before they arrive at the residence. DEEP Dons review these forms to gain additional training to handle special situations as indicated on the personal information forms.

Q: What happens to students coming from outside of Ontario in terms of medical assistance?
A: In Ontario we practice reciprocal billing for all Canadian provinces. This means we will treat you and then send the bill to your home province. No payment is required by the student directly.

Q: What happens to students coming from outside of Canada in terms of medical assistance?
A: International students must purchase travel health insurance prior to arriving in Canada. Students can do this through Expert Travel Financial Security (ETFS) who deals solely with international students. You can also make arrangements in your home country through your own health insurance provider.
To contact ETFS for an application form please contact them at 416-413-1527 or visit their website at www.etfsinc.com.

Q: What do students coming from outside of Canada require to pass through customs?
A: Most students attending DEEP will be able to cross the border by using the customs form distributed on the plane. DEEP is a non-credit program. You should specify that you are coming to a summer camp and not a university academic program (credit courses require a student visa). Some students coming from overseas may require a visitor’s visa to enter the country. Please contact the closest Canadian embassy to determine whether you will require this document or not.

Q: Are there any costs not included in the residence fee?
A: There will be some activities that are not covered by the residence fee. These include daily lunches, optional Wednesday night cultural events and optional Saturday day-long trips. These special activities and trips are fully optional. Additional information will be included in the pre-program package.
Transportation to and from the program is also the responsibility of the student.

Q: Will there be any over night trips away from the residence?
A: No.

Q: For students who speak English as a second language, will there be any communication problems?
A: Many of our DEEP Dons speak multiple languages and are trained in communication methods with ESL students.

Q: What happens to students who misbehave in residence? Will they be sent home?
A: All students sign a code of conduct before they arrive in residence. If any major offence takes place – anything deemed by law to be illegal, the student will be expelled from the program and the cost of their return home will be the sole responsibility of the student and/or parent/guardian. We will contact parents of the student to make suitable arrangements for the return home. Minor offences will be handled directly between dons and students. We reserve the right to punish repeat offenders with removal from the program.

Q: What happens if parents/guardians will be away during the month of July while students are at DEEP?
A: We must be provided with a contact number to reach a parent or guardian in case of emergency. For parents who will not be available while their children are in DEEP, please ensure that you appoint someone and give us his or her contact information to ensure that there is a contact person available in the case of emergency.

Q: How can parents or guardians contact students while living in residence?
A: All rooms have a telephone and each student will be given an extension number upon their arrival. You can call the main desk at 416-586-9563, dial 0 and ask for your child. If the student is not in his or her room, messages can be left with the porter who will ensure the student receives it. Students will also have access to a computer lab in the evenings for email purposes. We also encourage students with cell phones to bring them.

Q: Can parents or guardians send letters by post or care package?
A: Definitely! You can mail packages to:

Student’s Name
c/o DEEP Program
Wilson Hall, 40 Willcocks Street
Toronto, ON M5S 1C6 Canada

Q: Do you provide an airport greeting or pickup service?
A: We will have an optional greeting service at the airport to assist in coordinating ground transportation for our students upon arrival. If you opt for this service, indicate this on the personal information form included in the pre-program package.
