Frequently Asked Questions
1. What grade should I register my child for?
You must register your child for the camp program(s) that corresponds to the grade they are completing in the 2008—2009 academic year.
2. My child is in grade ______ but is very bright, can I register my child for the camp program that is one level higher?
Our policy is that all campers must register for the camp program that corresponds with their current grade level at school.
3. My child really wants to be with his/her friend/sibling?
If two children are in the same grade and registered at the same location they will automatically be in the same camp group. If two children are in different grades but wish to be placed in the same camp group, only the child in the higher grade level can register in the lower grade level.
4. What is your instructor to camper ratio?
We permit up to a maximum of 25 campers per class with 2 instructors. On average, there are 10 campers to each instructor.
5. Who are the camp instructors?
Our instructors are enthusiastic and knowledgeable undergraduate students studying engineering or science at the University of Toronto. Each instructor possesses first aid, CPR and general health and safety training, and has passed a criminal record check. Our instructors are bright, dynamic and responsible individuals and serve as excellent role models for our campers.
6. Is the camp very academically focused?
While we do consider SCI-Camp to be an educational camp program, it is of paramount importance to us that campers have fun while they learn. We believe that children are most effectively excited about science and engineering through a high-energy, hands-on, discovery-based approach. For this reason, all our camp programming emphasizes hands-on educational activities.
7. Are camp activities safe?
All our camp activities go through rigorous health and safety assessment and are only performed once approved by Dr. Bradley Saville, Health and Safety Advisor for the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto.
8. Do campers get to spend any time outside?
While camp activities are typically performed indoors, the lunch hour is spent in a designated play area outdoors (as weather permits). During this time campers have the opportunity to participate in a variety of outdoor games and activities with their fellow campers. For campers in primary grades, we offer outdoor mid-morning and mid-afternoon breaks. For camp activities that require testing in open spaces, we ensure it is done outdoors in a designated and supervised area.
9. What is the nature of the supervision provided to campers?
From the time your child is dropped off in the morning, to the time your child is picked up at the end of the day, supervision is provided at all times while your child is at camp. Campers are always escorted by camp staff from one location to the next. For the safety of each camper, only individuals listed in the pick-up
authorization section of the camper registration form are permitted to pick-up the camper.
10. Is there parking available for pick-up and drop-off?
There are designated pick-up and drop-off areas at each camp location. In this specified area, parents are permitted to leave their cars for a few minutes while they drop-off or pick-up their child(ren). Detailed information pertaining to your specific camp location will be provided in your pre-camp package. You should receive your pre-camp package 2 weeks prior to the start of your camp week.
11. Do you still have space in your camp?
We are still accepting registrations for all of our camp programs in all locations. Spaces are filled on a first-come-first-serve basis. We will contact you promptly if we are unable to accommodate your selection.
12. Do you operate camp on the Canada Day and Civic Holiday
Yes, we operate camp Monday to Friday for each week of the program.
13. I don’t feel comfortable faxing my credit card number, what can I do instead?
