Saturday Science & Engineering Academy

Courses Offered for Spring 2010

We have designed each course to help students develop their skills and theoretical knowledge in a specific area of science, applied science or engineering through hands-on learning and interactive projects.

This year we are pleased to offer courses at each grade level in the following areas: Life Science & Biomedical Engineering, Design & Practice, and Applied Science.

We encourage students to select courses that complement their aptitudes and interests. Students can select up to two courses; one morning course [10:00 AM to 1:00 PM] and one afternoon course [2:00 PM to 5:00 PM].


Level 300 Courses

Engineering the Earth

Spring 2010 | Morning: 10 am to 1 pm
Theme: Design & Practice

For students in Grade 7 & 8

This hands-on course will expose students to the science of the Earth and introduce students to some of the exciting projects engineers around the world are working on to effect change. Students will learn about the characteristics of the Earth, and be introduced to important concepts in environmental science. The course will also be introduced to applications of civil and environmental engineering, as well as key considerations in earth science. Mining strategy and practice, resource sustainability and renewable energy may also be explored. Students will be exposed to the fast-growing field of environmental problem-solving and the strategies that can be used for engineering a greener future.

A First Course in Forensics

Spring 2010 | Afternoon: 2 pm to 5 pm
Theme: Applied Science

For students in Grade 7 & 8

Criminalistics is the application of various sciences to answer questions relating to examination and comparison of biological, trace and impression evidence, controlled substances, ballistics and tool-mark examination, and other evidence in criminal investigations. Students in this course in forensic investigation will be introduced to major areas of inquiry in forensic science and crime scene investigation. Students will learn about the major science and engineering principles and theories utilized in forensic investigation and apply these to case studies. Some areas to be covered also include microscopy, anthropology, serology, fingerprinting and applications of forensic engineering.

Level 400 Courses

Math and Physics for Engineering

Spring 2010 | Morning: 10 am to 1 pm
Theme: Applied Science

For students in Grade 9 & 10

Students will gain an understanding of mathematics and physics concepts as they are related to engineering principles and theory. A brief review of familiar concepts, including are related to engineering principles and theory. A brief review of familiar concepts Newton’s Laws and gravitation will lead into more advanced developments of classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics and relativity. Additional topics may include probability theory and a discussion of some mathematical paradoxes. Applications of math and physics to Engineering, problem solving and design process will also be explored.

Mechatron-X

Spring 2010 | Afternoon: 2 pm to 5 pm
Theme: Design & Practice

For students in Grade 9 & 10

In this course students will discover how electronics work and how sensors can be used to sense the environment and control actions in the real world. Students will construct circuits and learn the theory underlying control of motors. Students will also learn the theory behind electrical and mechanical engineering design. They will be introduced to many types of robots, sensors found in robotics and consumer. Students will be given opportunities to construct circuits and work with various components commonly used in robots. Students will explore new developments and cutting edge research within the areas of robotics and mechatronics.

Level 500 Courses

Industrial Engineering and Operations Management

Theme: Design and Practice

For students in Grade 11 & 12

Industrial engineering is a branch of engineering concerned with the development, improvement, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment, energy, material and process. In this course, students will be introduced to key concepts in industrial engineering, where the mathematical, physical and social sciences combine with principles and methods of engineering to manage operations, systems and manufacturing. Students will explore new concepts through interactive, hand-on activities and the use of engineering software and analytical tools.

Chemistry and Epidemiology of Disease

Spring 2010 | Afternoon: 2 pm to 5 pm
Theme: Life Science and Biomedical Engineering

For students in Grade 11 & 12

Chemistry is the science concerned with the composition, behaviour, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions. Epidemiology is the study of factors affecting the health and illness of populations, and serves as the foundation and logic of interventions made in the interest of public health and preventative medicine. In this course, concepts of chemistry will be applied to gain an increased understanding of various disease and students will explore the intersection and application of both chemistry and epidemiology to various diseases, their etiology, transmission and treatment.
